The movie took in an estimated 24 million dollars over the weekend.
"Jumper," which was the top movie last weekend, is second this week, followed closely by the family fantasy "The Spiderwick Chronicles."
The only other new film to crack the top 10 was the Jack Black comedy "Be Kind Rewind." It's tied for number seven with "Juno," a best-picture nominee that's collected 130 million dollars since it opened 12 weeks ago.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.
