New hope for hair loss sufferers

A pair of just-released studies say scientists have identified a genetic basis for two types of hair loss. In the first, men and women start to lose hair because receptors on the surface of follicle cells don't form correctly.

In the other, a team found a mutation of the same gene caused sparse, dry and tightly curled hair.

Scientists say the new information will help them search for therapies to treat a variety of different types of hair loss.
