Human Society sues govt. over loophole

February 27, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
The U.S. Humane Society is suing the government for allowing "downer" cows to get into the food supply with a loophole for slaughterhouses. Downer cows are live cows that cannot walk. The lawsuit says a U.S. Department of Agriculture rule change made in July allows some sick and crippled cows into the food supply if they appear otherwise healthy. In 2004, the government tightened regulations after a case of mad cow disease was found in Washington State.

On Feb. 17, the USDA issued the largest beef recall in U.S. history after the Society released undercover video showing workers shoving sick and crippled cows into slaughter at a Chino company.
