"They are so welcoming to the young volunteers because they don't see that too often," said Brian Dunn. "And when they see us walk in and see that we want to help them and interact with them, it's a really great feeling because we know our work is appreciated."
At a Veterans Administration health care facility in Loma Linda, Brian helps veterans get through their day-to-day lives. At the same time, he is aware of how they enrich his life.
"It's helped me grow so much because I've learned so much from them. They have an insurmountable amount of knowledge to teach you about life," said Brian.
Whatever his duties, Brian does them with extraordinary feeling.
"Compassion, big heart, patience. Very mature for his age," said recreation therapy assistant Maria Antonazzi. "Very humble. No matter what you ask him, what the job is, he'll do it."
As young as he is, Brian is well aware of the history these people represent.
"I appreciate more than I ever have because this is a firsthand experience. I've just learned that we should appreciate what we are given, our freedoms in this country, because of what they've sacrificed through their lives," said Brian.
