Bus stop shooter in police custody

SOUTH LOS ANGELES Authorities are still trying to figure out what prompted the shooting Wednesday on the corner of Central and Vernon.

Police arrested 24-year-old Bill Ray Hines Thursday not far from the scene. They say he is a known gang member and that he was aiming for two men on the street.

Hines missed the two intended targets, instead hitting the eight innocent bystanders, including five children.

Investigators now want to talk to the two intended targets to find out what led to the shooting.

Meanwhile, City Councilwoman Jan Perry points to the shooting as just one reason why her district needs more federal money for public safety.

She's expected to present her proposal Friday and hold a town hall meeting at Carver Junior High School Monday.
