Sheriff's Dept. ordered to pay man $1.3M

LOS ANGELES Winston Hayes has won an excessive-force judgment against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Friday after a month-long trial.

Hayes suffered nine bullet wounds from an incident in 2005 in which deputies fired 120 shots at him at the end of a low-speed chase.

According to the deputies, Hayes attempted to do them harm by running them down. They claim to have fired in self-defense.

The jury of twelve took ten days to deliberate. Nine of the jurors sided with Hayes.

He wins a judgment of $1.3 million.
