Defibrillator technology could be hacked

March 12, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
A report being released Tuesday suggests the common new technology used to monitor defibrillators could be hacked -- with devastating results. That's because some companies do not encrypt transmissions from the defibrillator to the bedside monitor. Researchers say hackers could even reprogram the device, which could stop it from delivering a life-saving shock.

In the past few years, more than 100,000 patients in the U.S. alone have been implanted with newer devices that send information directly to a doctor.
