Paying for the crime of NCAA betting

Making wagers on sports like NCAA basketball is illegal. Two women who organized a monday night football pool were found out and charged with bookmaking. Both ended up in court and had to pay $130 fines and attorney's fees.

Now Lake Elsinore Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries has introduced a bill to ease betting penalties.

"The punishment doesn't fit the crime, and essentially what we're gonna to do is, we're go to bring this down to essentially something close to a parking ticket," Jeffries said.

The assemblyman said he'd like to wipe out laws against office pools, but federal law won't allow it.
