A bit of home for those so far away

SAN DIMAS Coming from a military family, Cool Kid Tristian Monterstelli has always rallied around our armed forces. Moving to a new city and school did not stop her from that pursuit.

"I wanted to start something to where I could still show my support and gratitude toward our troops. So one month later, in March, I began the project on my own," said Tristian.

The San Dimas High School senior did not hesitate to reach out to her new community to join her mission.

"I got a lot of support from the mayor of Glendora, and the whole city council, and then eventually - thankfully - it's now a club, which I'm very, very excited about," said Tristian.

Daylong searches for donations, all-night packing sessions -- it all seems worthwhile when the club hears from the troops.

"Just saying, 'Thank you,' 'Thank you for thinking of us,'" said Tristian. "They're over there without their families. The little that we can do -- pack boxes, mail them. I mean, oh my goodness, it truly is… It's indescribable."

Tristian's "others above self" attitude has impressed government leaders, students and faculty alike.

"She's not looking for any acknowledgement," said media center specialist Ms. Lesley De Los Cobos. "Actually, she prefers not to have any acknowledgement. And that's a real genuine and sincere person, that she does it from the bottom of her heart.

With energy and dedication, Tristian leads a group with a common goal, and is making sure to send a little bit of home to those serving so far away.
