New CPR technique could save lives

March 31, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
The American Heart Association say a new technique of "hands only" CPR could save thousands of lives. It's an alarming statistic, fewer than 1-in-3 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital ever receive any type of CPR.

The American Heart Association wants people who don't know traditional CPR to perform a modified version called the "hands only" technique.

It uses chest compressions only without mouth to mouth breathing.

Experts say if you see someone collapse and stop breathing, you should give hard, fast compressions to the center of the chest until help arrives.

The hope is that if people can at least do this version more lives will be saved.
