Pasadena may ban smoking

PASADENA The ban would prohibit smoking within 20 feet of business entrances, at outdoor dining areas, outdoor malls, in line at movie theaters, ATMs, bus stops and at public events, including the Rose Parade.

"An individual who does smoke is generally smoking filtered cigarette and the recipient of second hand smoke is receiving the unfiltered tobacco smoke which basically contains about 250 toxic contaminants," said Paul Ramirez, a proponent of the smoking ban.

A cigar shop owner fears the ban would close his business, even though clients could smoke in his shop.

"We also have 75 percent of our clients that come in they purchase their cigars here and they go to and other restaurants," said Anto Kamarian, owner of Cigars By Chivas.

Pasadena will study the economic impact of a smoking ban and present the findings and hear from the public at next month's City Council meeting.
