Report: Medical mistakes are expensive

Researchers at a healthcare ratings organization found that while many errors are harmless, some have fatal results.

In a two year period, medical mistakes led to more than 238,000 deaths.

The total cost of those errors was nearly $9 billion.

The mistakes included hospital infections, complications from anesthesia and blood clots.

And in more rare cases, patients were left with foreign objects, like a sponge, sewn inside them during surgery.

Researchers conclude most of the medical errors are largely preventable.
