The chase began at about 3:40 a.m. when the troopers tried to pull over two speeding cars in South Jersey. The chase lasted for several miles.
One of the cars, a Chevy Malibu, then rolled to a stop in front of a farmhouse along the highway in Mannington, about 15 miles southeast of Wilmington, Del. Curtis Hayden Boyd Jr., 19, of Newark, Del., then got out of the car and ran into the open side of an outbuilding on the farm, police said.
The troopers ran in after Boyd and he shot at them, authorities said. Matthew Szustowicz, 26, was hit in the hand and wrist area while Luis Tomlinson, 25, was struck in the face and ear.
At least one of the troopers shot back, killing Boyd. The state Attorney General's Office was reviewing the incident, which is standard procedure in a trooper-involved shooting.
The Malibu had been stolen from Kennett Square, Pa., while the other car involved had been stolen in Elmer a short time before the chase began, Jones said. It was later found at a Red Roof Inn in Christiana, Del., and Delaware State Police arrested a man in that area on Saturday.
