Hormone therapy increases stroke risk

A new study finds that post-menopausal women on hormone therapy are at an increased risk of stroke, no matter what age they start the treatment.The study involved more than 121,000 women.

Researchers found women who take estrogen have a 39 percent higher risk of stroke than those who have never taken it.

Women who take the combination of estrogen with progestin, which is a synthetic form of progesterone, had an increased risk of stroke of 27 percent.

The research is in Monday's archives of Internal Medicine.
