"There's no way there was one in the chamber, I completely unloaded that gun and the slide was locked back," the father said.
It apparently wasn't the first time the boy got his hands on a gun.
Authorities say he'd fired the gun into a kitchen cabinet eight months earlier.
Prosecutors have not decided what charges the father will face.
