Rite Aid shooting renders girl brain dead

HIGHLAND PARK The suspect, who was not been identified, allegedly shot a man outside a Rite Aid store at York Boulevard and North Avenue 64 at 3:15 p.m., striking a 30-year-old man in each of his arms.

A girl, 14, sitting in a nearby car at the time, was struck in the head by a stray bullet, public information officer Karen Smith said.

"She is probably not going to make it," Smith said. "She's brain dead."

Another child in the car was injured by flying glass. He was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

"The 30-year-old male Hispanic victim shot in each arm was the intended target." Smith said. "Police believe it was gang-related. "We have someone in custody. There is still an active scene going on."
