Health tips to reduce rosacea

May 27, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Millions of Americans describe their skin as red and ruddy. The official name for this condition is called rosacea.Sun exposure can aggravate rosacea. Patients are warned to wear sunscreen, avoid spicy food, alcohol and extreme temperatures.

Dermatologists say rosacea can worsen over time as the overgrowth of blood vessels continue and some patients experience a bacterial infection.

"We may begin to see thickening of the skin with some enlargement of the oil glands and thickening of the nasal skin," said Dermatologist Janice Warner.

Prescription topical ointments and oral anti-biotics may help. Laser treatments may also be an option.

They not only reduce the visibility of enlarged blood vessels, but they can help skin look younger as well.
