Should women be able to eat in labor?

LOS ANGELES Most U.S. hospitals restrict food consumption to reduce choking risk if surgery is required.

Now some experts say women in labor should be allowed to eat.

In a statement, UC San Francisco administrators say food provides hydration, nutrition and stress relief.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives agrees, but the decision should be based on a woman's health and the risk of surgical intervention.
