Long Beach to crack down on loud motorcycles

LONG BEACH According to Commander Jay Johnson of the Long Beach Police Department's South Division, it is.

Due to a large number of complaints from area residents--coupled with the increased noise emitted from some bikes--city officials have begun to seek out riders of excessively loud motorcycles.

Johnson told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that modifying a motorcycle to make it noisier is illegal. The maximum level of permissible sound emissions in California is 95 decibels.

However, crackdowns in Long Beach won't come without some dissention from biking enthusiasts. A number of forums have popped up throughout the Internet, taking police in Malibu and other coastal towns to task for similar crackdowns in noise within those areas.
