LAUSD schools stop serving tomatoes

LOS ANGELES School officials said Monday they have "indefinitely suspended" serving uncooked tomatoes, joining McDonald's, Burger King and other restaurant chains which are leaving tomatoes off sandwiches and salads in the wake of the food poisoning outbreak.

The district says the suspension will be in effect until federal health officials trace the source of tomatoes responsible for illnesses in at least 16 states.

The Food and Drug Administration is recommending that consumers avoid red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes unless they were grown in certain countries and states.
