Fires continue to burn in Santa Cruz County

Evacuation orders have been lifted
SANTA CRUZ The 630-acre blaze started near Watsonville Friday.

Authorities lifted evacuation orders for 2,000 residents and most of them are returning home.

Officials say this blaze started with a series of roadside fires, 20-feet apart. They may have been set by a passing motorist, according to several 911 calls.

Then lightning sparked more fires.

Some homeowners are praising the firefighters.

"They're fabulous," said resident Barbara Williams. "These guys are just wondrous. I mean, for all the fires they've been fighting all day, yesterday."

Dozens of homes were threatened but no property was damaged.
