Sewage used to track drug use in cities

June 24, 2008 8:41:03 AM PDT
Environmental scientists are looking to raw sewage to track illegal drug use and trends in different cities. The L.A. Times reports it only takes a few tests at municipal sewage plants, and they show L.A. County has more cocaine in its sewage than that of European cities.

Meth levels in sewage are much higher in Las Vegas than cities like Omaha and Oklahoma City, and Londoners are heavier heroin users than people in Italy and Switzerland.

The EPA could soon start monitoring traces of illicit drugs coming through treatment plants daily.
