June 24, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
A new study finds where a woman gives birth makes a big difference in the quality of hospital care they receive. And experts say it varies a lot from place to place. Researchers from HealthGrades analyzed more than 12 million hospital records on childbirth and newborns at hospitals in 17 states.

Results showed the best performing hospitals consistently gave women better care.

The results also showed lower rates for birth complications and newborn deaths, as well as, a 40 percent lower risk of death from heart disease and stroke.
