June 27, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
A new study suggests one in ten middle aged Americans suffer silent strokes and don't know it.Boston University researchers examined the MRI brain scans of more than 2,000 healthy people with an average age of 62.

Those with an irregular heart beat were even more at risk, being twice as likely to have a mild stroke.

Mini-strokes or silent cerebral infarctions raise a person's risk for further strokes and memory loss.
