Benefits end; agency thinks woman dead

July 1, 2008 6:05:24 AM PDT
A Torrance woman was shocked to learn her Social Security benefits had been cut off because the agency thought she was dead.Patricia Flack, 65, discovered the problem two months ago when she received a letter from Medi-Cal, saying those benefits had also been cancelled.

"Well, when I first saw it, I didn't think it looked very official, so I was going to ignore it, but I tend to need to read everything. And so I read through it and I couldn't believe it was saying that it had received notice of my death, so I was kind of shocked," Flack said.

Social Security eventually wired Flack a major portion of her benefits, telling her the rest is on its way.

A Social Security spokesman says the agency can't tell for sure how they received the erroneous death report.
