Singer helps girls change their tune

Cool Kid Alana Mailes
LA CANADA, Calif. "I'm hoping that music can be a way for them to heal a little bit and find a place where they can be away from the troubles of their lives," Alana said.

As much as Alana wants to open up a new world to these girls, she knows it is important for them to hold on to their own musical culture too.

"I had them sing three songs in English and then one in Spanish because I still want them to know that Spanish is a beautiful language, and they should always be proud of it," Alana said.

Alana has developed more than just a student-teacher relationship with her students. She has true affection for her young pupils.

"Alana has given so much of herself and so much kindness to the girls," Vena Luthey said. "She genuinely cares for each one of them."

Alana not only hears the musical improvement, she sees the personal growth as well.

"Some of the kids who weren't really well-disciplined at the beginning started to change, and they started to love it and that's what made me really happy," Alana said.

Bringing beautiful sounds to brighten young lives -- she is our Cool Kid, Alana Mailes.
