Man attacks girlfriend with sword

July 14, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Authorities released a 911 call, hoping the public will aid them in finding a man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death with a sword. The tape is an emotional plea for help from a little girl, desperate to save her mother. The 9-year-old made the 911 call early Saturday morning at the couple's Quartz Hill home. Officials said the call was placed just after she and her three young brothers watched their father murder their mother with a 3-foot-long sword.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department is asking for the public's help in tracking down 28-year-old Jesus Canales. Investigators say Canales had been arguing with his long time girlfriend, 26-year-old Lucy Preciado, when he suddenly grabbed the sword and attacked.

"We need to get a desperate man off the street and we need to get him off the street right now. We would prefer to do it in a way that brings some closure to this very difficult case. But this is not something that is simple and easy, and we need the public's help," said Sheriff Lee Baca, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

Detectives believe Canales is driving a bronze 2002 GMC Safari van. The van has California license plates with tag number 6CBY663.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Jesus Canales, authorities urge you to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at (323) 890-5500.
