Fig tree becomes official L.A. monument

There was a special ceremony Thursday in the heart of Los Angeles' Little Tokyo district to honor and help preserve a unique tree.City officials joined with members of the Little Tokyo Historical Society to designate a 60-foot fig tree as an official Los Angeles historical cultural monument.

The Aoyama Tree, planted decades ago, now stands in the middle of a city-owned parking lot. It has long symbolized the 1920 founding of the Koyasan Buddhist Temple, which once stood nearby.
