Sleep apnea increases death risks

August 1, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
We all know severe snoring and obstructed breathing increases a person's risk for stroke and heart disease, but new research indicates the consequences could be much worse. Two new studies find those with sleep apnea may more than double their odds of an early death.

The research shows sleep disordered breathing increases the chance of dying even beyond other risk factors such as advancing age or obesity.

The condition is often treated with a CPAP machine, which delivers air through a face mask while the patient sleeps.
