Costly vaccine worth it for pre-teens

August 20, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
A new study questions the cost-effectiveness of an expensive vaccine aimed at protecting girls from cervical cancer.Researchers say Gardisil lowers future medical expenses when given to pre-teen girls, but not when given to women 20 and older. Experts think the earlier a woman is vaccinated, the more likely she'll avoid cervical disease, which would lower health-care costs down the road.

A computer model didn't show the same for women immunized later in life.
