'Subway to the Sea' closer to reality

MTA officials say they will continue studying options for two new subway lines.

The plan calls for the purple line and the red line to extend westward. The purple line would continue running west along Wilshire Boulevard.

A shorter leg of the red line would extend along Santa Monica Boulevard and then head south at either La Cienega or San Vicente Boulevard.

The combined cost of the two lines would be about $9 billion.

A series of public meetings about the proposed extensions begins Wednesday night in Santa Monica.
