West Covina tradition cheers up neighbors

WEST COVINA, Calif. "It's outstanding. He does it annually, faithfully, every year," said Pat Vernon.

However, there is a catch. You are only allowed to keep one for yourself and give your word to give the rest away.

"Anybody you meet on the street -- the postman, your next-door neighbor -- Make somebody else happy today," said Robert Bryant.

"I'm going to take this to the convalescent home and bring some joy to their lives," said one recipient.

Bryant's customers know the drill. They sign the book, pick a bunch of roses and head out, armed with a gift that truly keeps on giving.

"One year, I handed them out to my neighbors in the afternoon, after I left work. I handed them out to all my neighbors. And they thought it was so cool that I was doing that. They were all surprised," said Charlene Hess.

"I'm going to give them to my neighbors and to my mailman, and keep one for myself," said Maryann Forestner.

"Flowers cheer everyone up, especially when they get it unexpectedly. It's a wonderful thing that he does," said Carolyn Chase.
