Drugs impede chemo-stimulated tumor

September 10, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
Doctors know that tumors often rebound rapidly follow chemotherapy. But now they're beginning to understand why. Chemotherapy damages not only the tumor but also the blood vessels surrounding it.

Canadian researchers say the body compensates by sending cells to help the tumor regenerate.

In animal models, scientists discovered combining chemo with medications that block blood vessel re-growth, doctors would have more success.

If this finding can be duplicated in humans it could change the way doctors treat cancer.
