Jury selection begins in ex-sheriff case

October 3, 2008 6:49:44 AM PDT
More than 650 prospective jurors will line up on Friday at the Santa Ana federal courthouse as jury selection begins in the corruption trial of former Orange County sheriff Michael Carona. The U.S. Attorney's office has accused Carona of using his elected office to take bribes in exchange for favors. His wife and alleged mistress were also indicted.

There had been early speculation in law enforcement circles that a plea bargain would happen before a trial, but no deal was made, and the trial is expected to begin at the end of this month.
