Gang shooting kills 11-year-old, teen

LOS ANGELES The shooting happened Sunday night near the L.A. Convention Center, near Connecticut and Valencia Street, south of Olympic, at about 6:30 p.m.

Two suspects walked up to a group of people and opened fire.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related but are unsure if the 11-year-old victim was involved in a gang.

Long Beach resident Luis Rodriguez, 18, and Los Angeles resident Steven Munoz, 11, were both shot in the chest. Witnesses said the victims tried to run from gunmen after shots were fired.

Paramedics found the victims a short distance away from the shooting scene. Munoz had collapsed on West 11th in front of his house, and Rodriguez was found bleeding in a parking nearby.

The suspects, described only as Latino males ages 17 to 19, fled and remain at large.

Munoz's brother Jesse Mariscal spoke with Eyewitness News and said his brother was not in gangs and doesn't know why he was shot.

"He was just a simple kid, wanted to grow up to be a skateboarder, wanted to grow up to be something, now all that got taken away from him," Mariscal said.

LAPD Officer Julianne Sohn said the suspects fled in a gray Honda Civic with white spots on it.

Anyone with information is urged to call LAPD homicide detectives at (213) 485-3650.
