Man shot to death in North Hills

MISSION HILLS, Calif. Officers responding to a 911 call found the body of the victim on a sidewalk in front of Sepulveda Middle School on Columbus Avenue around 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

The victim was 40-year-old David Mendoza of Canyon Country, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was shot multiple times.

Police say they don't have a motive for shooting. They also say they do not have any suspects at this time.

"We're not certain that it was an altercation that actually occurred, or that he was in a vehicle or anything to that fact," said Captain Jorge Villegas, Los Angeles Police Department. "The only information - as of this point - is that he was on the sidewalk when we found him."

Police say Mendoza had a history of run-ins with the law.

"He has an extensive crime pattern in the past. It could, potentially, be related to narcotics or gangs," said Villegas. "In the past, we have - this area has been linked to narcotics. It's also been linked to some gang activity. So, both avenues we're trying to pursue."

Police are looking for any witnesses who may have seen the murder.

"At this point we don't have any witnesses. But the people that we have talked to in the area have said that they heard multiple gunshots had been fired. But they hadn't seen anything. So we're really looking to identify any potential witnesses who may have seen anything that they deem suspicious," said Villegas.

If you have any information, you're asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department Mission Division at (818) 838-9800.
