175-acre artificial kelp reef completed

SAN CLEMENTE Edison calls the reef the first environmental restoration project of its kind. of its kind.

The underwater results are spectacular. The reef was designed to compensate for environmental damage caused by the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The $40 million cost for the reef is being shared by Edison and other power companies, including San Diego Gas and Electric Company.

Edison has promised to monitor and maintain the reef for the next 40 years.
