'Cool Kid' Fabian Pacheco guides students

LOS ANGELES "If they have troubles, then we can work out something. They have the same teachers I had, so it's easier. I can just talk to them and then help them out," says Fabian.

At Belvedere Middle School in East Los Angeles, Fabian helps with a program called A.V.I.D., or Advancement Via Individual Determination. Life can be difficult in the East L.A. area, but Fabian wants the kids to know that education can be a way to improve the present and the future.

"Sometimes it's not the schoolwork. It could be outside of school, problems they have. This neighborhood isn't the best one. Coming to school is a safe zone for them to learn and get through life," says Fabian.

Whether it's tutoring in the classroom, or taking the kids on a field trip to experience college life, Fabian is seen as a role model.

"I point to him ... 'like Fabian'. He's here on time, on his own time, volunteering. It brings my examples to life," says Wendy Cortez, A.V.I.D. coordinator.

A sophomore at Roosevelt High School, Fabian still feels connected to his old neighborhood school and the students there now.

"It's a great experience, because I get to come back to the community and help out and hopefully they succeed too," says Fabian.

Keeping in touch with his past and opening young minds to the endless possibilities of the future, Fabian is our "Cool Kid."
