Calif. ranks high, low in crime rates

California is home to cities among the safest and most dangerous when it comes to crime rates. While New Orleans was ranked the city with the highest crime rate. The CQ Press ranking says the Gulf Coast city had the most major crimes and murders in 2007.

Camden, New Jersey was second highest. That's followed by Detroit, Saint Louis and Oakland, in Northern California.

The safest city with the lowest reported crime rate is Ramapo, New York, about 40 miles northwest of New York City. Mission Viejo was second, followed by O'Fallon, Missouri.

The rankings are based on FBI crime statistics.
