Fatal accidents shut down 210 Freeway

CLAREMONT As a result of the man's death and a fatal accident about two miles west, the freeway was closed for more than two hours from Fruit Street east nearly to the San Bernardino County line.

At about 5:50 a.m., a man described only as in his 40s climbed over the perimeter fence of the overpass above the 210 Freeway at Towne Avenue and jumped onto the fast lane of the freeway below, according to CHP Officer P. Busch. The driver of a Toyota van heading east was unable to avoid hitting the man, who died at the scene, Busch said. The driver of the van was not injured.

About an hour later, another person was killed when a vehicle wedged under a truck on the eastbound 210 at Fruit Street, according to CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos. The individual's name has yet to be released.

Three vehicles were involved in the Fruit Street collision but further information, including the gender of the person killed, could not yet be confirmed, according to Villalobos. He did not think that any other injuries had been reported in that crash.
