Dog dragged to shelter behind truck

DOWNEY, Calif. The woman told authorities she put her year-old pit bull, now bloody and bruised, in the bed of her truck, intending to take it to an animal shelter to be put to sleep.

The dog was leashed but apparently fell out and was dragged along until the woman reached the Downey shelter parking lot. A motorist driving behind the truck watched it happen.

"She stated that when she first saw the dog she thought it was dead, but then she saw it try to stand, and flip-flopping, bloody, and she was horrified," said Corporal Al Torres, Southeast Area Animal Control.

The dog, named "Prada," is expected to recover. The woman, who faces a felony cruelty charge, said she wanted the dog put down because it had mange, a curable skin condition.
