Racial gap in colon cancer deaths

December 15, 2008 8:17:36 AM PST
The racial gap in colon cancer deaths is widening, according to a new report.According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer deaths are now nearly 50 percent higher in blacks than in whites. The gap is blamed on lower screening rates among blacks and poor access to quality health care.

Experts say the gap has been widening since the 70s, when colon cancer death rates for the two racial groups were nearly equal.
