The child, Roberto Lopez, was hit in the upper body and treated on scene. He was transported in critical condition to Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said LAPD Lieutenant John Romero at a 6 p.m. press conference. The child's age was originally reported as 5 years.
The LAPD Rampart Division is investigating the shooting as a murder.
