Rash of fatal shootings hits Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. Three people are dead and a 1-year-old is hospitalized Monday morning.

The latest victim is a 26-year-old man. Police said he was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked SUV in front of an apartment building when he was shot to death just after midnight on Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives do not have a motive for his killing.

On Sunday, two men were killed after multiple gunmen fired into a crowd on East Del Amo Boulevard near Cherry.

The violent weekend began with a shooting in the 1600 block of Sherman Place. Police said a man and a 15-month-old girl were shot as they stood outside an apartment building on Saturday night.

"That's an area that's been challenged in the past with gang activity, but there's a lot of really good people that live in that area," said Officer Jackie Bezart from the Long Beach Police Department.

"You have people from outside that come in and commit violent acts, and to the cowards that would shoot a baby and leave them for dead, that's just unacceptable," Bezart said.

The toddler and the family friend who was standing beside her are both in stable condition. Police do not know if they were the intended targets.

Police do not believe the three shootings are related, but they're not ruling anything out just yet because the investigations are so preliminary.

Authorities said they are hoping to collect clues from witnesses in all three cases. Anyone with information is urged to call (562) 435-6711
