Elderly woman trapped in recycling bin

MOUNT HOLLY, New Jersey Police said 76-year-old Mary Davis was in her garage when she was knocked off balance by her dog and fell backside first into the 25-gallon plastic bucket.

Neighbors and friends became concerned about the arthritic widow after not seeing or hearing from her. On Wednesday morning, Davis' daughter called neighbor and friend Michele Ayala, who headed to Mrs. Davis' home with her 14-year-old son.

Unable to open the locked doors, the teenage boy shimmied through a dog door and opened the garage door.

"There she was, feet and hands sticking in the air with a little voice," Ayala said.

Davis was discovered essentially folded in half inside the can. She was pulled out of the bucket, "responsive and happy," according to police, and was rushed to the hospital.

Ayala says Davis survived the bitter cold thanks to a heater she kept in the garage for her pampered dog.
