Anaheim police shootout wounds suspect

ANAHEIM, Calif. According to investigators, the man refused to come out of his room at the Royal Pacific Inn on Beach Blvd. He said he had a handgun and threatened to kill himself. Officers backed away, evacuated nearby rooms, and called in a negotiator as well as a /*SWAT*/ team.

Police say that about 10:15 a.m., the man emerged from the motel room with a handgun.

"There was gunfire involving both the suspect and the officer," said Anaheim police spokesman /*Sgt. Rick Martinez*/ The officer was not injured.

The suspect was hospitalized with wounds believed to be non-life threatening. His name has not been released.

Officers later discovered a 17-year-old runaway girl in the motel room. Police say she had suffered a foot injury from a bullet fragment that may have come from the suspect's gun.
