When sheriff's deputies arrived at the house they found Vargas laid out in the front yard with several stab wounds to his upper body. He later died at Loma Linda Medical Center.
Officers said Vargas was only going to be home for a short while and was going to be deployed to Afghanistan.
Investigators have not made any arrests but said the suspects fled the scene in two vehicles; a black Toyota Sequoia SUV with tinted windows and a silver Acura Integra with a smashed windshield and a broken side window.
