Cool Kid Alexis Ly counsels young girls

SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. "I'm here as a mentor to them -- somebody still close in age, who's still a teenager as well," says Alexis. "I'm there to answer their questions, if they need help."

Alexis founded the program Girl Talk at /*Lake Center Middle School*/ in Santa Fe Springs. Besides supplying information the girls need, Alexis sees another important area of their development where she can help: their self-esteem.

"With these meetings I hope I can inspire them to be positive about themselves," says Alexis.

As a senior at /*Sante Fe High School*/, Alexis already possesses a unique balance in dealing with the girls.

"She gets on a personal level with the kids. But she maintains a teacher-type authority with them," says teacher Sylvia Mahlstede. "She doesn't let them manipulate her."

Alexis is involved in many activities with the city and needy families around her. So she plans to have a career that allows more of those opportunities.

"I want to go into a field that allows me to help others. That is my number one thing. I want to give back to the community," says Alexis.

Alexis is helping young girls see their potential and showing signs of a great future herself. She is our "Cool Kid."
