Elderly woman loses home, climbs up tree

DOWNEY, Calif. The 86-year-old woman climbed 20 feet up an avocado tree behind a home in the 7600 block of Calmcrest Drive and refused to come down for hours, despite the plea of police and firefighters.

Neighbors apparently heard her in the tree and called police. Officers found the woman in the tree at about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

She was reportedly distraught over the loss of her home and stayed in the tree for hours. A 'notice to vacate' sign was posted in front of the home, and the woman was reportedly living in a trailer in the backyard of the property.

Authorities tried to persuade the woman to come down, but they eventually left her alone, staying close by in case she needed help.

When authorities went back to check on her at about 3:45 a.m., she had already climbed down the tree.

Adult protective services was called in to evaluate her mental state.
