Baby killed in fire in new family home

PHELAN, Calif. Firefighters with the San Bernardino County Fire Department said the mother woke up to hear her child crying just before 7 a.m.

She tried to go into his room but it was filled with smoke and flames. She said she grabbed her 3-year-old daughter and escaped the burning home.

When firefighters arrived, they tried to rescue the baby boy, but he was already dead.

The fire was put out in 10 to 12 minutes.

Fire investigators do not believe the cause of the fire is malicious or arson and believe the fire began in the boy's room or right outside his room.

The family had just moved into the home four days ago. They are staying with other family members.
